Omar Sharif

Wan Li

Mao Tse-tung banned playing cards in China. But when Mao died and Deng Xiaoping took control of the country, he and Wan Li worked hard and successfully to make bridge popular. Deng died in 1997. Now Wan Li has passed away, on July 15 at the age of 98. An article will be added to the blog shortly.

If not the Olympics …

After not permitting bridge to be included in the Summer Olympics, the International Olympic Committee has chosen to allow bridge to be part of the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia. In a press release, Gianarrigo Rona, the President of the World Bridge Federation, said that this excellent news has been achieved primarily by the Indonesian Olympic Committee President, Rita Subowo, the Indonesian Bridge Federation, Esther Sophonpanich from Thailand, Patrick Choy from Singapore and Michael Bambang Hartono from Indonesia. It has been announced that there will not be a SportAccord event this year, after four years of tournaments in Beijing. There will be a big event in the Chinese capital, though, the Hua Yuan Cup. This will take place from November 8 to 14. The United States Bridge Federation (usbf.org) is sending a women's team of three pairs to compete. The 7th European Open Championships finished on July 11 in Tromsø, Norway. (The town is pronounced Tromser.)
